EPISODE INTRO

Welcome to Money On The Sidewalk, I’m your host, TJ Del Reno!

My job is to walk around the city looking for kids who know stuff.

I ask them weird questions, and when they get ‘em right, I give away money!

It’s money, and we’re on the sidewalk, so that’s why we call this podcast “Money on the Sidewalk.”

Play along with us wherever you are, see if you can answer weird questions too!

THEME INTRO

Today, we’re all about what’s UNDER the sidewalk… things that are “Found Underground.”

You might not realize it, but there’s a lot going on under your feet.

I’m gonna find some kids, ask them questions about the underground, AND give away some cash. Who’s with me?

Game 1 – Most Popular Potato

Kid riff/banter: Welcome to Money on the Sidewalk, today we’re asking questions and playing games about things that are Found Underground, my personal favorite of which is the potato.

D’ya like a potato? A hash brown? A mash? What’s your potato jam?

Play Instructions: Well we took a poll to find out how people like to eat their potatoes. Which do you think was more popular – potato chips, or french fries?

Answer: French Fries

Prize: Correct guess = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Game 2 – Where Does Your Garden Grow?

Kid riff/banter: Thanks for playing Money on the Sidewalk, I’m your host TJ and the theme of today’s show is Found Underground. Things like vegetables. What’s your favorite vegetable? How do you like to eat it?

Play Instructions: I’m going to name some vegetables. If the veggie I name grows underground, you say “Dig it.” If it grows above-ground, you say “Pick it.” you two will take turns answering, and the one with the most correct answers wins the prize.

Prize: Player with most correct answers = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Questions:

  • Tomato (pick it)
  • Potato (dig it)
  • Peas (pick it)
  • Carrot (dig it)
  • Celery (pick it)
  • Yam (dig it)
  • Beets (dig it)
  • Corn (pick it)
  • Radish (dig it)
  • Lettuce (pick it)

Game 3 – Naked Mole That

Kid riff/banter: Thanks for playing Money on the Sidewalk with me, my name’s TJ and today I’m asking kids about things that are Found Underground.

What do you think it would be like to live underground? Like in a fort or a den or something?

Play Instructions: Of all the animals that live underground, the one with the most awesome name is the Naked Mole Rat.

We’re going to give equally awesome naked mole names to other things. For this game, I’ll read a sentence, and you fill in the blank with a word that rhymes with rat.

Prize: A least 3 right = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Questions:

  • If a naked mole rat wanted to keep its head warm, it would put on a naked mole ________ (hat)
  • A naked mole rat hits a baseball with a naked mole _______ (bat)
  • When a naked mole rat comes in from outside, he wipes his feet on a naked mole ____ (Mat)
  • If a naked mole rat is the opposite of skinny, he’s naked mole _________ (fat)
  • If a naked mole rat has a pet that meows and purrs, his pet is a naked mole ______ (cat)
  • If a naked mole rat was a really whiny little kid, he’d be a naked mole ____ (brat)
  • If a naked mole rat’s full name was Patricia but you wanted to call her by a nickname you’d call her naked mole ____ (Pat)

Game 4 –  Physical Challenge

Kid riff/banter: My name’s TJ, welcome to Money on the Sidewalk, a game show where we play games and ask questions and I give away cold hard cash!

Today’s theme is things that are Found Underground.

Play Instructions:  Water. Heard of it?

Most of the water we drink comes from underground wells, pumped to the surface by suctioning. Kinda like these cups of water with straws.

Your challenge is to put your mouth on a straw, and sing the alphabet song through the straw into the water without stopping. You’ll each get a turn.

Whoever gets the farthest through the alphabet without stopping to breathe, or laugh, or whatever, wins our prize.

Prize: player who lasts the longest = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Game 5 – Groundhog Movies

Kid riff/banter: Hey thanks for playing Money on the Sidewalk, I’m TJ and today I’m talking about what’s under our feet. Not pavement, but under that even – all kinds of things that are Found Underground.

Have you dug many holes before, do you know what’s down there? What did you find?

Play Instructions: Well groundhogs are one of the many furry animals that live underground. They’re cute, but they almost never star in movies. We’re going to fix that.

I’ll name some movie remakes starring groundhogs, and you tell me the names of the original movies.

Prize: 4 or more right = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Questions:

  • Groundhog Underpants (Captain Underpants)
  • The Groundhog King (The Lion King)
  • A Groundhog’s Journey (A Dog’s Journey)
  • Alvin & the Groundhogs (Alvin & the Chipmunks)
  • Sonic the Groundhog (Sonic the Hedgehog)
  • Back to the Groundhog (Back to the Future)
  • Kung Fu Groundhog (Kung Fu Panda)
  • The Secret Life Of Groundhogs (The Secret Life of Pets) (also acceptable: The Secret Of Bees)

Game 6 –  Opinion

Kid riff/banter: Welcome to Money on the Sidewalk, I’m your host TJ, and today on the show we’re asking about things that are Found Underground.

Play Instructions:  But right now I want to get your opinion, so there’s no right or wrong answer for this, you get a dollar whatever you say, but we’re wondering, If you had to live underground, would you rather live in a cave, or a subway station?

Why/what would be cool about that?

Prize: any response = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Game 7: Worm True or False

Kid riff/banter: Thanks for playing Money on the Sidewalk with us today. The theme of our game show today is Found Underground, we’re talking about things down there, like under the lawn, under the street, whathaveyou.

Can you think of anything that lives underground?

Play Instructions: Well it’s a fact that worms live underground. But I’ve also made up some things about worms that are not true.

I’ll make some worm statements, and your job is to guess which are true, and which are false.

Prize: more than 3 correct = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Questions:

  • Worms breathe through their skin (True)
  • Worms are baby snakes (False)
  • Worms have hair (true – very small fine hairs)
  • Worms have excellent eyesight (False – they have no eyes)
  • Worms eat dirt (True)
  • Worms make a high-pitched sound like dolphins (false)
  • There are over 6,000 species of worms (True)
  • Worms love to sunbathe (False – they need moisture)

Game 8 – Mined or Made?

Kid riff/banter: Today’s Money on the Sidewalk is all about things that are Found Underground.

Have you ever buried something in the ground? Like to hide it for safekeeping? Or get rid of it for good? What was it?

Play Instructions: We humans like to bury stuff, and we also like to dig stuff up from underground. Digging stuff up is called mining.

I’m going to read a list of items, and for each one, you tell me whether it was “mined” or “made.”

“Mined” means it’s dug up out of the earth, “made” means it’s made by people.

Prize: 4 correct = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds

Questions:

  • Cotton Candy (made)
  • Gold (mined)
  • Silver (mined)
  • Bubble gum (made)
  • Erasers (made)
  • Diamonds (mined)
  • Notebooks (made)
  • Gravy (made)
  • Granite (mined)
  • Coal (mined)
  • Zippers (made)
  • Smart-phones (made)

Game 9 – Tongue Twister

Kid riff/banter: Thanks for playing Money on the Sidewalk today, I’m your host TJ.

Today we’ve been talking about things that are Found Underground. And now I’ve got a tongue twister for you guys, about stuff that’s way, way, waaaaay underground.

Play Instructions: If you go really far down underground you’d find a ball of iron at the center of the earth, called the inner core.

That’s surrounded by the outer core, then the mantle, then the crust, which we’re standing on.

Your tongue twister is to repeat the names of the layers of the earth as many times as you can without flubbing up.

Got it? “inner core, outer core, mantle, crust.” Each of you will get a shot to say it as many times as you can, the one who says it the most times without messing up wins.

Prize: kid who does the most repetitions = 1 dollar stapled to a packet of seeds
